Prof. Mohapatra is the recipient Teaching Excellence Awards and Distinguished Teacher Award of IIT Kanpur.
Professor Mohapatra has received more than 16 times Letter of Commendations for teaching excellence from the Senate Chairman for all levels of courses. It is given for Instructors and Tutors receiving a student feedback of more than 3.5 in a scale of 4.0.
YNM loves to teach physics and material science to both undergraduate and graduate students of engineering and science. He consciously tries to make physics more interesting and useful for engineering and interdisciplinary students. His techniques emphasize the perspective of an experimentalist that he is without losing theoretical rigour.
In courses that he has developed, a recurring theme has been to make physics communicable to engineers and technologists useful to them both in content and style. Special emphasis is given to physics induced technologies for electrical engineers and materials scientists
He offers a specially designed course called, 'Semiconductor Nanostructures : Physics and Technology' as an elective to graduate students of physics, electrical engineering and materials science.
He has developed and regularly offers an elective course specially designed for interdisciplinary materials science graduate students on 'Electronic Materials'.
Currently he is also developing a new course on "Physics of Organic Semiconductors'. This semester he is also teaching, and carrying out class room tests for a new course on "Communication Skills for Physics" for final year physics undergraduates.
He is interested in developing methods of teaching through experimental Laboratory. Over the last couple of years he has been trying to bring about changes both in content and format of laboratory teaching at all levels.
He is also interested in meta-issues of teaching and learning with a critical evaluation of content, and pedagogical tools.
